Merchant ship’s complement is divided into Deck, Engine & Catering Departments. The nomenclature for positions and entry levels may vary with the nationality of a shipping company. The Master remains in overall command and this position is attained through the Deck

10th Standard Pass with English 17.5 to 25 Years 6 months Pre-Sea Course for General Purpose Rating
12th Standard Pass with Science, Maths and English 17.5 to 25 Years 6 months Pre-Sea Course Saloon Ratings
10+2 pass with 60% average in PCM, and 50% in English 25 Years
  • 12 months Pre-sea Deck Cadet Course.
  • 3-Year B.Sc. Degree in Nautical Science.
  • 2-1/2 year Marine Engineer under Alternate Training Scheme.
  • 4-Year Workshop Training for Marine Engineers.
  • 4-Year Degree in Marine Engineering.
B.Sc. with 55% in Physics, Chemistry, Maths or Electronics, along with Physics for at lest One University year 25 Years 12 months Pre-Sea Deck Cadet Course
B.E./B. Tech. From IIT or other AICTE Recognised College 25 Years 12 months Pre-Sea Deck Cadet Course
B.E. in Mechanical Engineering or Naval Architecture with minimum marks of 50% in final year and with minimum 50% marks in English language at 10th or 12th or in Degree Exam.  28 Years 1-Year Trainee Marine Engineer Course
Diploma in Mechanical / Marine / Naval Architecture / Electrical Engineering with 50% Averagewith minimum marks of 50% in final year and with minimum 50% marks in English language at 10th or 12th or in Degree Exam.  28 Years 2 Year Trainee Marine Engineering Course
Dip/Degree in Hotel Management (AICTE Recognised) with 40 % marks in English language at 10th / 12th standard examination 18 to 25 Years Orientation Course for catering personnel
Diploma in Shipbuilding Engineering with 50% Average

(4 years course)

28 Years 2-years Trainee Marine Engineering Courses
2-years ITI Course with 50% Average 25 Years 6 months Pre-Sea General Purpose rating (PS-GP)
